Plano ISD gets $500K for COVID-19 safety in schools

PLANO, TX – The city of Plano will give Plano ISD $500,000 it received through the CARES Act, the federal stimulus package passed to help shore up the economy during the coronavirus pandemic, allowing the school district to purchase COVID-19 safety equipment.

The move is part of an agreement that will help the district pay for custodial items and desk shields, Randy McDowell, the school district’s chief financial officer, said during a recent school board meeting.

Plano ISD has already spent about $275,000 on cleaning and sanitation and about $550,000 for desk shields, he said.

“This will go a long way in reimbursing us for those couple of categories,” McDowell said. “We greatly appreciate the city partnering with us.”

Superintendent Sara Bonser said she has talked to “many superintendents across the state, and I will tell you that what the city of Plano has done has set them apart from many other cities and counties.”
