Cowgirls Win 23rd Women’s Soccer Title

RICHARDSON, TX – Hardin-Simmons won its 23rd American Southwest Conference Women’s Soccer Championship and 18th in a row on a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks after dueling UT Dallas to 1-1, double-overtime draw at UTD Soccer Field on Saturday.

Rachel Bean gave the Cowgirls (7-0-2) the lead in the first half as she headed home a Madelyn Dowell corner 19:27 into the match. The Comets (6-0-2) were able to get the equalizer in the 62nd minute when Sierra Foster hit a cross into Sofia Munoz who buried it to tie the game.

The Cowgirls thought they had won the game at the very end of the first overtime when Caroline Poole buried a shot but after a discussion with the officials, they determined it did not cross the goal line before the clock hit :00.

After a scoreless second overtime, the teams went to shots from the mark to decide the champion.

Both teams converted their first two kicks as Dowell and Baylee Ford hit for the Cowgirls and Sofia Munoz and Keely Fillman scored for UTD.

Kayla Gable came up with a save of a Stephanie Ward shot and Aurora Arevalo hit the third shot for the Cowgirls. Josie Meeks for UTD and Kaylee Maddox for the Cowgirls hit their fourth shots, giving HSU a 4-3 lead.

Gable then saved Foster’s shot and the Cowgirls celebrated the title. Gable was named the MVP of the tournament.

HSU outshot the Comets 29-9 in the contest and 15-5 in shots on target. The Cowgirls also had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Gable and Hayley Foley split time in goal for the Cowgirls. Foley had two saves in the first half and Gable had a pair of saves in 65 minutes in goal. Megan Hannah had 13 saves for UTD.
