PLANO, TX – Kamloops native Logan Stankoven will be part of Team Canada at the 2021 U18 World Championship in Frisco and Plano, Texas, that begins on April 26.

The Blazers forward was one of 25 players named to Team Canada and one of 10 WHL players on the roster that includes 15-year-old forward Connor Bedard.

Last year as a rookie, Stankoven scored 29 goals and currently leads the Blazers with three goals in two games heading into tonight’s game against the Prince George Cougars.

Stankoven’s season with the Blazers will be cut short and he’ll only be available for the next five games before leaving.

Players and staff will begin to self-isolate at home on April 12 before travelling to Frisco on April 17. They will also be tested for COVID-19 three times. Upon arrival in Texas, all team personnel will enter a four-day hotel quarantine before starting a pre-tournament camp on April 21.

Canada’s roster features 23 players who played for Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red, or Team Canada White at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Medicine Hat, Alta., and Swift Current, Sask.

“Despite a difficult year for our players and staff, we are confident this group will represent our country with pride while giving us a chance to compete for a gold medal in Texas” Director of Player Personnel Alan Millar said.

Canada will play Finland in its only pre-tournament game on April 24. Canada will open the tournament against Sweden on April 26, and will also take on Latvia, Switzerland and Belarus in preliminary-round action.

The 2021 U18 World Championships is set to run until May 6. Canada last won a gold medal at the tournament in 2013.
