The industry-generated 247Sports Composite rates McCown as a strong three-star recruit who is ranked No. 15 nationally among 2022 dual-threat quarterback prospects. He is also ranked No. 98 overall regardless of position in the state of Texas for his class.
McCown was the only left-handed quarterback in the top-tier group at the Elite 11 Dallas Regional. McCown performed well in rollout drills, where he made accurate throws with and against his body on multiple occasions.
McCown’s ability to throw on the run in a camp setting reflects his functional athleticism on the field for Rusk High. In 2020, McCown threw for 1,080 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions as he completed 51.1 percent of his attempts. He added 270 yards and eight TD’s on the ground.
Colorado landed McCown’s commitment in mid-March, less than two months after offering the East Texan. McCown, who is the son of former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, picked Colorado over other Power Five offers from Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. He has also gotten Group of Five offers from Charlotte, Ohio, UNLV, and UTSA.
