HOUSTON, TX – The mother of a boy found dead Tuesday night at a Houston hotel was ordered held on a combined $150,000 bond on two criminal charges related to the death, officials said.

Kayla Holzendorf was charged on Wednesday with injury to a child and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of her 8-year-old son, Keyontae Holzendorf, according to authorities. Her common-law husband, 28-year-old Dominique Lewis, faces the same charges.

A Harris County judge set Holzendorf’s bond at $100,000 for the first charge and $50,000 for the second charge. Conditions of bail include a curfew, travel restricted to the state of Texas, no weapons, no drugs or alcohol and electronic monitoring.

During the hearing, a prosecutor said there was evidence that the boy was chronically abused and possibly tortured, including ligature marks on his ankles and patches of skin missing from parts of his body.

Charges could be upgraded, the prosecutor said, following the results of an autopsy investigation in the death.

In charging documents, both adults are accused of binding the boy and striking him with and against a blunt object. The couple is also accused of concealing a pair of handcuffs and duct tape during the course of the investigation into the child’s death, court records show.

Both remained in custody Thursday morning. Holzendorf had no prior convictions and is a five-year resident of Houston, a defense attorney said during the hearing.
