These Plano firearms examiners are ‘best in lab’ for their crime scene work in North Texas

PLANO, TX – The Plano Police Department’s firearms examiners were recently recognized by the North Texas Forensic Association as “Best in Lab.”

The examiners are on the department’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network unit. The network, “NIBIN” for short, is the only national network that allows for the capture and comparison of ballistic evidence to help solve and prevent firearms crimes, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

It’s one of the main tools used by law enforcement to help identify violent shooters and track guns that were used in crimes, according to the ATF.

“Our Firearms Examiners are the best in the area and also provide assistance to neighboring agencies when needed,” Plano police wrote in a Facebook post.

According to the North Texas Forensic Association, a group of area forensic professionals concerned with recognizing and promoting professional and personal development, Plano’s NIBIN unit was nominated by five different agencies.
