Local Links: Plano West-ex, Texas golfer Pierceson Coody to represent U.S. in Walker Cup
PLANO, TX – Texas junior Pierceson Coody was among the 10 players selected to play for the United States in the Walker Cup. The U.S. team will meet Great Britain and Ireland in the 48th match at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla., May 8-9.
Coody, a Plano West graduate, won the 118th Western Amateur last August. He also posted a two-stroke victory in the 116th Trans-Mississippi Amateur at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton in June 2019. Coody and his twin brother, Parker, are grandsons of 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody. Coody’s Texas teammate, Cole Hammer of Houston, was also selected.
The other players selected: U.S. Amateur champion Tyler Strafaci of Davie, Fla.; Ricky Castillo of Yorba Linda, Calif.; John Pak of Scotch Plains, N.J.; Davis Thompson of St. Simons Island, Ga.; Quade Cummins of Weatherford, Okla.; Austin Eckroat of Edmond, Okla.; Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, Calif.; and William Mouw of Chino, Calif.
SMU junior McClure Meissner of San Antonio is the first alternate.
Schwab Challenge to begin ticket sales
The Charles Schwab Challenge announced it will sell a limited number of tickets for the tournament at Colonial Country Club on May 27-30.
The tournament is selling a clubhouse Patio Club daily hospitality ticket and an on-course daily hospitality ticket. Priority will be given to sponsors, hospitality customers and club members to purchase tickets. Remaining tickets will be released to the public at a later date, subject to availability.
“While we don’t know the final attendance numbers, we do know that we will have spectators and can start selling tickets,” tournament chairman Jim Whitten said in a news release. He added that tournament officials are hopeful of hosting at least 5,000 people each day of the tournament.
River Crest, Preston Trail staff win event
The River Crest Country Club team of head pro Reid Parrish and assistant pro Nick Krsnak won the NTPGA’s KBS Tour Shafts Pro-Assistant Championship at The Tribute Golf Links, and the Preston Trail Golf Club team of director of instruction Jeff Barton and assistant pro Spencer Dillard won at Old American Golf Club.
Barton and Dillard carded a 7-under 64 and won a four-way playoff with a birdie on the second extra hole.
The Monday event in The Colony was originally scheduled for 36 holes, but it was shortened to 18 holes because the weather forecast called for thunderstorms.
Dallas youth charges to 2-stroke victory
Reese Roberts of Dallas shot a 3-under 68 in the final round for a two-shot win in the boys 14-and-under division in the Legends Junior Tour’s Spring Preview at The Golf Club at Texas A&M. Daniel Moon (139) of Temple won the boys 15-18 division by two shots, and Austin’s Mimi Burton (146) won the girls 12-18 division by one shot.
