PLANO, TX – Plano City Council member Lily Bao announced Monday that she plans to run for mayor in the May 1 election.

To run for mayor, Bao will have to resign from her Place 7 seat. She said at a city council meeting this week she will continue to serve until a replacement is found. The council has 120 days to call a special election to replace Bao, whose term was set to expire in 2023.

“Thirty years ago, I came to America with $200 in my pocket,” Bao, a real estate agent, said in a text message Tuesday. “This country has blessed me so much that I am always grateful and want to be a blessing to others.”

She said her goal is to lead Plano so it remains a “city of excellence.”

Bao challenged Mayor Harry LaRosiliere in his 2017 re-election bid. LaRosiliere is ineligible to run again because of term limits.

Candidate filings for May’s election in Plano are being accepted through Feb. 12, according to the city.
